According to a press release, Major Kalita, serving with the The Kumaon Regiment and the 50th Battalion, Rashtriya Rifles, has been involved in several successful operations since October 2022. These operations led to the neutralisation of three terrorists and the apprehension of four Over Ground Workers (OGWs), contributing significantly to security efforts in the region.

The award recognises, among other achievements, his role in a counter-terrorism operation conducted on December 2, 2024. Acting on intelligence inputs received at short notice, Major Kalita planned and led an ambush operation targeting a wanted terrorist.

During the operation, the suspect allegedly opened fire after being challenged by security personnel and attempted to flee. The Army officer reportedly directed his team to block escape routes while maintaining surveillance and suppressive fire.

The release stated that Major Kalita subsequently advanced towards the concealed militant despite the risk involved and engaged him in close combat, resulting in the terrorist's neutralisation. The slain militant was described as an A++ category terrorist allegedly involved in the killing of seven civilians and multiple attacks on security forces.

The Shaurya Chakra is India's third-highest peacetime gallantry award and is conferred for acts of bravery, valour and self-sacrifice away from the battlefield.
