There is much political debate over the implementation of the UCC or Uniform Civil Code in Assam. All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) chief Maulana Badruddin Ajmal on Thursday condemned the Assam government. Ajmal expressed concern over the state’s public health, infrastructure and recent flood situation and targeted Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sharma in the context of UCC. He said the chief minister should understand the meaning of the rules before implementing them. Ajmal alleged that the BJP government is busy playing religious politics by creating a divide between Hindus and Muslims. He said the government should focus more on development than religious polarization.
Ajmal said he had recently visited several hospitals in the state which were in poor condition. The hospital has no doors and windows and lacks enough doctors or nurses. Even hospital toilets are so dirty that people cannot use them. He also criticized the government for the deaths due to artificial floods in Guwahati. Ajmal said the government has failed to develop infrastructure and education sector and his party will strongly oppose UCC in the upcoming assembly session.
Addressing the Chief Minister, Ajmal said that by the grace of Allah or Allah, he has got a huge majority and therefore it is his duty to provide justice to all irrespective of caste and religion. Ajmal also opposed the government’s eviction drive. He also made serious allegations against MP Rakibul Hussain and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sharma. He claimed that the two had a close relationship during the Congress government and were involved in land grabs in different parts of the state. He said that many government lands were sold in the past and now the Chief Minister is playing in the name of eviction by joining the BJP.
He is also the President of All Assam Garia-Maria Desi National CouncilRsEl Haque responded to Badruddin Ajmal’s statement. Haque said polygamy is not a tradition of Assamese Muslims and the Uniform Citizenship Act does not have any negative impact on the culture of Assamese Muslims. He supported the bill and called Ajmal’s party AAUDF a communal party. Ajmal said they will continue to protest against the government’s religious and political attacks and oppose the UCC Bill in the Assembly.
