Congress leader Jairam Ramesh condemned the Modi government’s Great Nicobar project. He alleged that the government went ahead with the project ignoring acute environmental concerns. He also questioned the military significance of the project. Reacting on social media, the Congress leader said that the Great Nicobar Port will soon become part of the Modi-Adani empire. According to him, the project does not contribute to our military infrastructureRather, the deployment of INS Buzz to Campbell Bay will enhance military capabilities.
Jairam Ramesh started in this area for the last few years“They have been opposing the proposed projects and have described the Great Nicobar project as very destructive to the environment. Questioning the credibility of the environmental impact assessment, he said that for the island’s sensitive ecosystem, a study based on just one season was not enough, but an in-depth study covering all seasons was not enough. He remarked that many NGTs have also cited national authorities. Citing an ISRO report, he said the Galatia Bay pointed out the erosion-prone areas and demanded that the report of the high-powered committee submitted in a sealed envelope to the NGT be made public.
The Congress leader also questioned the change in the government’s argument in favor of the project. “Initially, the project was called environmental requirements,” he saidBut now the government claims it is a military necessity. According to him, India’s defense requirements in the region can be met only by strengthening the existing infrastructure like INS Baj. Noting that the Great Nicobar Islands Project in its current form is largely a commercial venture, Ramesh warned that it would result in the complete destruction of many wildlife habitats and species before they are identified or listed.
