US President Donald Trump said talks between the US and Iran have gained momentum. He said that the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important maritime trade routes, will be reopened only after the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between the two countries. However, no agreement has been finalized yet, he said.
The president’s comments came amid ongoing international efforts to ease tensions between Washington and Tehran. Referring to the potential deal, Trump said it is expected to be completed this weekend. However, he said that the situation may change at any moment in the ongoing process with Iran. He stressed that the Strait of Hormuz would be opened quickly if a settlement agreement was signed between the two sides.
Trump also said the US plans to take Iran’s enriched uranium stockpile as part of any future deal. “Only the United States and China have the ability to safely manage uranium, and so the United States will take steps to seize it,” he told reporters.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghassi also confirmed that the two countries are still in contact. In an interview with Lebanon’s Al Mayadin television, Araghasi said that while there had not been particularly significant progress in resolving the overall regional conflict, Tehran’s diplomatic channels with Washington were still active.
