GUWAHATI: Residents living near the Doordarshan staff quarter are facing a serious civic problem as garbage continue to be dumped along the roadside, causing unbearable stench and unhygienic conditions in the locality. Despite efforts by the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) to relocate the waste disposal point, the area continues to be used as an illegal dumping ground by locals and passersby.
During a visit to the site, GPlus found mounds of garbage bags piled on drainage pipes along the road, with scattered waste, plastic bags, and rotting debris littering the footpath and roadside. The situation has been worsening over time, raising serious concerns about public health and sanitation in the neighbourhood.
A local sugarcane juice vendor near the spot said the area was earlier used as a temporary garbage storage point, but that practice has long been discontinued. "People still throw garbage here out of habit, even though it is no longer an authorised dumping site," he said.
Resident Usha, who lives nearby, expressed her frustration, saying the stench has become unbearable. "We have to cover our mouths every time we pass through this stretch because of the terrible smell" she said.
The GMC Ward Councillor acknowledged the problem, stating that the dustbin previously placed at this location has been shifted. "GMC regularly cleans the area, but people continue to dump garbage here," the councillor said, adding that a new dustbin facility is being constructed near Purabi Dairy in Panjabari, with the work currently 90 percent complete.
Residents are now urging the GMC to take stricter measures against illegal dumping, including installing surveillance and imposing fines on violators.
