GUWAHATI: The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) convened a special meeting on Tuesday, June 9, to discuss a range of pressing urban issues ahead of the approaching monsoon season, covering everything from flood management to public health concerns.
The meeting was chaired by GMC Mayor Mrigen Sarania and attended by nearly all ward councillors of the corporation. The gathering reflected the civic body's determination to address the city's seasonal and civic challenges in a collective and coordinated manner.
Scientific flood control measures for Guwahati city formed part of the wide-ranging discussions, with officials deliberating on systematic approaches to reduce waterlogging and flooding that has historically disrupted normal life during heavy rainfall.
Public health also received significant attention during the meeting. Issues related to diseases caused by pollution as well as communicable diseases such as tuberculosis were discussed at length, with councillors underlining the need for timely preventive measures.
Speaking to the media, GMC Mayor-in-Council Deputy Speaker Ratna Singh described the meeting as highly productive. She said the meeting was very positive and beneficial and expressed confidence that the discussions would soon translate into concrete action on the ground.
