Guwahati Likely to Host Modi-Takaichi Meeting in Early July

GUWAHATI: Guwahati is expected to host a meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Japanese counterpart, Sanae Takaichi, in early July, with discussions likely to focus on investments in the northeastern states and other aspects of India-Japan bilateral ties, sources told GPlus.

According to sources, Takaichi is expected to arrive in India on a three-day visit beginning July 1. While the final itinerary is yet to be confirmed, Guwahati is likely to be one of the key stops during the visit.

The proposed engagement in Guwahati is expected to place particular emphasis on Japanese investments in the Northeast.

“The Guwahati visit is most likely to have a special focus on bilateral investment and cultural ties,” a source said, adding that preparations for the high-level event are underway.

Takaichi assumed office as Japan's prime minister on October 21, 2025. Modi met her on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Johannesburg, South Africa, on November 23, 2025.

The previous India-Japan Annual Summit was held in Tokyo in August 2025.

Japan has invested heavily in the development of India's northeastern region through infrastructure, connectivity and urban development projects, as well as talent mobility initiatives.

In 2019, then Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe was scheduled to visit Guwahati for a bilateral meeting with Modi. The visit, however, did not take place because of unrest over the anti-CAA.

The northeastern states have been a priority under India's Act East Policy, which seeks to strengthen economic cooperation, cultural ties and strategic relationship with countries in the Asia-Pacific region while enhancing connectivity with neighbouring countries.
