After Japan, neighboring Nepal has banned Indian mangoes. The government of Nepal has taken this step in the wake of serious allegations of excessive use of chemical pesticides during mango production. Nepal’s Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Husbandry, in a notification, said that some consignments of mangoes imported from India were found to contain harmful pesticide residues above the prescribed limit. Therefore, import of Indian mangoes in the country has been banned due to food safety and public health concerns.

Mango farmers in Malda, Murshidabad, Krishnanagar and other areas are worried as one country after another has stopped buying Indian mangoes. Government sources said the harmful chemicals were detected during testing of Indian mango samples at border checkpoints in April and May. Nepal was forced to take tough decisions like Japan and ordered strict border surveillance. The Government of Nepal has made it clear that the health of the countrymen is their first priority and food quality will not be compromised.
Indian mangoes are in high demand in Nepal during summerBecause very few mangoes grow in Nepal. Traders in Nepal import large quantities of mangoes from India to meet the country’s demand. However, the ban has now caused deep concern among Indian farmers as well as Nepalese fruit traders. An average of 3,300 metric tonnes of Indian mangoes are sent to Nepal every year, with a market value of around Rs 40 crore. Indian mangoes, which are very popular in the Nepalese market, have been banned due to their taste and smell.
