GUWAHATI: A resident of Meghalaya's Ri-Bhoi district was arrested by the Forest Department on Wednesday, June 3, in connection with the killing of a wild elephant in the Topatuli Beat area under the Sonapur Forest Range. The arrest was made at around 9:30 am following leads gathered during the investigation.
Speaking to GPlus, a Forest Department official said, "We suspect that this could be a racket. Yesterday at 9:30 am, one person was arrested after his phone number was tracked. We have also seized a few objectionable items from him which are used in wildlife poaching. The investigation is currently underway and the person is in custody."
The elephant carcass had been recovered last month at Dikchak Hill in the Topatuli Beat area under the Sonapur Forest Range. The area forms part of an important elephant habitat and movement corridor connecting the forests of Assam and Meghalaya.
Officials said several items suspected to be linked to poaching activities were seized from the accused during the operation. Investigators are now examining whether the elephant killing was carried out by a larger network involved in wildlife crimes.
The accused remains in custody while the investigation continues.
