Pothole-Ridden Stretch at Guwahati's Fatasil Ambari Tiniali Raises Safety Concerns for Commuters

GUWAHATI: The Fatasil Ambari Tiniali stretch along Guwahati's A.K. Azad Road continues to remain in a damaged condition, with large potholes, uneven road surfaces and waterlogged craters posing risks to commuters in one of the city's busiest commercial corridors.

The area reported several damaged patches across the roadway, with potholes becoming particularly hazardous after rainfall as they fill with water, making it difficult for motorists to gauge their depth.

The stretch witnesses heavy movement of two-wheelers, commercial vehicles and goods carriers throughout the day.

Local residents and commuters say the problem is not new and has persisted despite repeated complaints.

Speaking to GPlus, a shopkeeper in the area said, "This stretch is damaged since a long time. Around 10 days back, PWD officials had come and taken pictures of the road, yet nothing at all has happened."

Daily commuters say the condition of the road significantly increases the chances of accidents, particularly for two-wheeler riders.

"This stretch is very dangerous. I travel by this road daily and have many times faced the risk of skidding and falling. This is such a busy commercial area and huge vehicles travel through this road. Yet this is the condition here," a commuter told GPlus.

Another street vendor in the area said, "I frequently witness minor accidents in this stretch. And when it rains, the pothole is filled with water which increases the chances of accidents."

A traffic official deployed in the area acknowledged that the road has remained damaged for a considerable period.

"I am not very aware about accidents here. However, the road has been damaged for a long time. I will pass the issue to the higher authorities," the official said.

The situation at Fatasil Ambari Tiniali reflects a larger problem seen across several parts of Guwahati, where damaged roads and recurring potholes continue to affect daily movement despite periodic repair works.

With the monsoon season setting in, concerns over road safety are likely to intensify as waterlogging further conceals damaged sections of roads.

For commuters, the issue goes beyond inconvenience. In areas with heavy traffic movement, deteriorating road conditions can increase the risk of vehicle damage, traffic disruptions and accidents, particularly for two-wheeler riders who are most vulnerable to sudden skidding.

GPlus attempted to contact officials of the Public Works Department (PWD) regarding the condition of the road and any proposed repair measures. However, no response was received till the time of filing this report.
