GUWAHATI: A wanted dacoit was killed in an exchange of fire with police in Assam’s Nagaon district late on Monday, May 25, during an operation to foil an alleged robbery attempt.
The deceased has been identified as Khairul Ali, a resident of Lakhimpur and a key accused in a robbery case in Morikolong last month.
Speaking to GPlus, the Officer-in-Charge of Nagaon Police Station said, “The operation was launched based on intelligence inputs that Ali was allegedly leading another planned robbery operation near Barkandali Mikirpar under the Ranglu Police Outpost. The gang opened fire during the raid, prompting retaliatory fire.”
Police said four to five members of the gang managed to flee from the spot.
Ali was taken to the Nagaon Medical College and Hospital, where doctors declared him dead. A 7.65 mm pistol and two empty cartridges were recovered from the site of the encounter.
He was accused in the April 24 robbery at the residence of Dr Ranjit Saikia in Morikolong, during which Dr Saikia and his wife Ruprekha were assaulted. Ruprekha later died while undergoing treatment.
Further investigations are underway.
