President Draupadi Murmu on Sunday approved an important decision of the Union Cabinet. The number of judges in the Supreme Court including the Chief Justice will be increased from 33‘b. The government has already issued an ordinance in this regard. Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal made a post on social media‘The Ordinance is an Act of the Supreme Court, Amended in 1956. By excluding the Chief Justice, the number of judges stood at 33 to 37.
Earlier, May‘The proposal to increase the number of judges was approved in a Union Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, 2026 is also proposed.
According to Govt, It has become imperative to strengthen the efficiency of the highest courts of the country. Currently, more than 92 thousand cases are pending in the Supreme Court. In such a situation, if the number of judges is increased, the hearing of the case will be accelerated‘b and general public will be able to get justice in due time.
Under Article 124(1) of the Constitution of India, Parliament is given the legal right to determine the number of judges of the Supreme Court through legislation. The number of judges has changed over time to accommodate the growing number of cases in the court. Supreme Court Act, In 1956, the number of judges was initially fixed at 10 excluding the Chief Justice. In the 1960s, the number rose, In 1977, to 17 people, In 1986, it was increased to 25 and in 2008 the Act was last amended., When Parliament increased the number of judges from 30 to 33 excluding the Chief Justice.
