5th World Environment Day was celebrated by Pragjyoti Communications, a leading Voluntary Organization of Assam on 5th June at Mohan Banshi Das Junior College, Jhargaon, Morigaon District. The organization has been celebrating this day since 2011 and this year it is trying to create environmental awareness among students and public through a day-long programme. At 8 am Prag Jyoti Chairman Deepak Hazarika started the program by planting banana saplings in memory of environmentalist Zubin Garg. Later an awareness rally was taken out with the participation of students, teachers, parents and local residents. The procession goes to the Central Agricultural Science Center in Jhargaon. There, NEPCO officer Abhishek Kumar and Central Coconut Board official Rajeev Bhushan Prasad encouraged the students to protect the environment. Several herbs and fruit seedlings were planted there with the help of Dr. Rijusmita Sharma, Senior Scientist, Krishi Vigyan Kendra. This was followed by drawing, essay, casual speech and quiz competitions among the students. The quiz was conducted by Quiz Master Navjyoti Bharali and 45 teams participated in the quiz. Morigaon District Commissioner Anamika Tewari was also present on the occasion and encouraged all the contestants.

There was an intimate discussion with the students from 2 pm. Several prominent scientists and environmentalists participated in the event. Dr. Sangeeta Chowdhury, Child Welfare, Dr. Nabanita Bhattacharya, Associate Professor, University of Guwahati explained flora and environment, scientist Dr. Rizwan Uz Zaman explained weather and climate change and forest officer Ujjal Chowdhury explained environmental conservation in simple terms. They present the environment to the students through audio-visual media.

The 10th issue of ‘Pavitra’, a bilingual compilation on environment and nature, was launched on this auspicious occasion. The Editor-in-Chief of this collection is Deepak Hazarika and Associate Editor is Kushal Dutt. The book was unveiled by Dr. Mahananda Chutia, silk scientist, Lokendra Hazarika, historian, Gitanjali Barua, founder of Prag Jyoti and several other dignitaries and environmentalists. The program concluded with the screening of ‘A Silvan Saga’, a documentary on elephant life by renowned painter and director Jyoti Prasad Das.
