Young Chess Players Shine at Guwahati City Championship 2026


 

GUWAHATI: The Guwahati City Chess Championship 2026 commenced on Saturday, May 23, at the Guwahati Chess Academy on R.G. Baruah Road, with intense competition marking the opening day in the Under-9 category.

In the Under-9 Boys section, five players — top seed Maitrabh Baruah, second seed Reyaan Nobis, Sreehan Kumar Hore, Ridhiman Bhuyan, and Gaurav Sarma — emerged as joint leaders after the completion of three rounds, each securing three points.

In the Under-9 Girls category, Aadvika Giri took sole lead with a perfect score of three points from three rounds. She claimed the top spot after defeating Nyra Jain in the third round. Sanvi Kashyap and Dorothy Patgiri are jointly placed second with 2.5 points each after their third-round encounter ended in a draw.

A total of 61 players from across the city are participating in the championship.

The tournament was formally inaugurated by Mukuta Deka, President of the All Assam Chess Association. Among others present during the opening ceremony were Avishek Chakraborty, Vice-President of the Guwahati City Chess Association, Treasurer Suja Ul Islam Hazarika, and executive members Ranadeep Sinha and Sankar Baruah.

The event is being conducted under the supervision of FIDE Arbiter Pranab Kumar Nath as Chief Arbiter. He is being assisted by International Arbiter Monimala Sinha, Senior National Arbiters Sankar Baruah and Hiramoni Das.
