Neymar bid a tearful farewell to international football as Brazil crashed out of the World Cup.


Neymar made his international debut in a Brazil jersey at the MetLife Stadium in the United States 16 years ago. His 16-year international career ended on that ground on Sunday night. Brazil’s all-time top scorer Neymar retired from international football after losing to Norway in the World Cup semi-finals.

Neymar could not contain his emotions after the final whistle of the game. He broke down in tears on the field. His teammates consoled him. “I tried hard. I poured my best. But this is the end. My journey started here, I finished here,” he told reporters later in the mixed zone.

Despite injuries, ups and downs in form and various controversies off the field, the 34-year-old footballer dreamed of winning the World Cup. Coach Carlo Ancelotti also gave him a chance. The ending was sad though. Brazil’s hex dream was not fulfilled in the sixth attempt. Neymar’s Brazil failed to overcome the curse of Europe.

Neymar could not play the first two matches of the World Cup group stage due to a hamstring injury. Came on as a substitute against Scotland. He did not play against Japan. The coach also sent Neymar as a substitute against Norway.

He played only 37 minutes. A goal from the penalty spot late in the match reduced the gap but it was not enough to win. Neymar could not contain his emotions at the final whistle. The Brazilian star broke down in tears on the pitch.

Since his debut in Brazil, Neymar has scored 80 goals in 130 appearances, including four hat-tricks. He ended his career as the highest goalscorer in the history of Brazil. Neymar has played four World Cups.

He won a silver medal at the 2012 Olympics, a gold medal at the 2016 Olympics and the Confederations Cup in 2013 for the national team. However, his dream of winning the World Cup was not fulfilled. He will remain a tragic hero in Brazilian football history.
