The flood situation in Assam further worsened on Sunday. The floods killed one person and affected more than 57,000 people in seven districts. The state government has prepared the Indian Army and the Indian Air Force for possible evacuation and rescue operations.
According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority, the total death toll in Sibsagar floods has risen to five.
The latest ASDMA flood bulletin states that over 57,100 people have been affected in Charideo, Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, Jorhat, Sibsagar, Tinsukia and Odalguri districts. The number more than doubled after nearly 24,000 people were infected in four districts on Saturday.
Charideo district is the worst affected district with around 24,000 people affected. The floods affected over 22,000 people in Dhemaji and 4,000 in Dibrugarh.
The Chief Minister said the state government has asked the Army and Air Force to be on standby as the flood situation continues in Sibsagar, Charideo and Jorhat.
“As the flood situation worsens in Sibsagar, Charideo and Jorhat, the Government of Assam has requested the Indian Army and Indian Air Force to be ready to assist in evacuation and rescue operations if necessary,” Sharma said in a post on X.
The Chief Minister directed four Cabinet Ministers – Ajanta Neog, Bimal Bora, Keshav Mahant and Sushant Bargohai to immediately visit the affected districts and supervise rescue and relief operations and ensure timely relief to every affected family.
ASDMA said the administration is running 14 relief camps and aid distribution centers in four districts, where 440 vulnerable people are currently taking shelter. The casualties are 10 people from different areas of Charideo. The casualties are 10 people from different areas of Charideo.
The relief items distributed in the last 24 hours include 58.17 quintals of rice, 10.89 quintals of pulses, 3.26 quintals of salt and 326.88 liters of soybean oil.
So far, 298 villages have been inundated across the state and 3,874.84 hectares of agricultural land has been affected. The floods also damaged dams, roads, bridges and other infrastructure in several districts.
River Budhdihing is flowing over the danger line at Chenimari in Khawang area of Dibrugarh district. More than 37,500 pets and poultry were also affected by the floods, ASDMA said.
