GUWAHATI: A tragic accident in Guwahati's Bhootnath Kalipur area claimed the life of a student and left another critically injured after a roadside tree suddenly collapsed onto their moving scooter on Friday morning, June 12.

Speaking to GPlus, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Jalukbari Police Station said that Parishmita Hazarika and Jyotimoy Mohan were on their way to Pandu College to appear for an examination when the incident occurred. The two were travelling from the Bharalumukh side when the decades-old tree fell onto the road, crushing their scooter beneath it. The officer added that Parishmita Hazarika was a resident of Sonari in Charaideo district.
Both students sustained serious injuries and were rushed to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) for treatment. While Jyotimoy Mohan remains under medical care, Parishmita Hazarika later succumbed to her injuries and was declared dead at the hospital.
The incident triggered panic in the locality, with residents and passersby rushing to help the victims before emergency personnel arrived at the scene.
Further inquiries are currently underway to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the tree's collapse.
