The match marked Messi's record-breaking sixth World Cup appearance, making him the first footballer in history to play in six editions of the tournament. The 39-year-old celebrated the milestone in style, scoring all three goals to guide Argentina to a comfortable win in their Group J opener.

With the hat-trick, Messi's World Cup goal tally rose to 16, drawing him level with Germany legend Miroslav Klose as the highest scorer in men's World Cup history. While Klose reached the milestone in fewer matches, Messi became the oldest player ever to score a World Cup hat-trick, surpassing the previous record held by Cristiano Ronaldo. He also became the oldest player to score multiple goals in a World Cup match.

The achievement carried additional significance as it came exactly 20 years after Messi scored his first World Cup goal against Serbia and Montenegro on June 16, 2006. The Argentine captain also became only the second men's player, after Cristiano Ronaldo, to score in five different World Cup tournaments.

The night was filled with personal milestones for the Argentine superstar. Messi became the first South American male footballer and only the third men's player overall to reach 200 international appearances. His World Cup goal contributions now stand at 24, comprising 16 goals and eight assists, allowing him to surpass Pelé's record of 21 contributions for the most in tournament history.

Messi also extended his scoring streak at the World Cup to five consecutive matches, moving within one game of the all-time record jointly held by France's Just Fontaine and Brazil's Jairzinho.

Beyond the individual achievements, the victory was significant for Argentina as a team. The reigning world champions registered a winning start to their campaign, becoming the first defending champions to win their opening World Cup match after previously losing their first games following title triumphs in 1982 and 1990.

Argentina now sit comfortably atop Group J and will next face Austria and Jordan as they continue their quest to retain the World Cup crown.
