GUWAHATI: A nearly 120-metre stretch of the Bonpuroi Jamuguri embankment in Assam's Lakhimpur district has come under severe stress due to the rising water level and strong currents of the Brahmaputra River, prompting authorities to step up reinforcement efforts.

The update was shared by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in a post on X on Wednesday, August 5.
The affected embankment is located in Bonpuroi Jamuguri under the Jamuguri Gaon Panchayat. Officials of the Water Resources Department and the Lakhimpur district administration have launched emergency measures by deploying additional layers of protection, including geo-bags and porcupines, to strengthen the vulnerable stretch and prevent erosion.
Meanwhile, residents living in Dhalpur-Hawajan and nearby areas under the Bihpuria and Gohpur Legislative Assembly Constituencies have been urged to remain vigilant and strictly follow advisories and instructions issued by the district administration as a precautionary measure.
The Chief Minister noted that the embankment forms part of a ₹29.08-crore anti-erosion project being implemented with assistance from the Asian Development Bank (ADB).
