Assam to Introduce Green Cess on Polluting Industries and Activities


 

GUWAHATI: The Assam Government on Friday, July 10, announced that it will introduce a Green Cess on identified polluting activities and assets as part of the Assam Budget 2026–27, with the proceeds earmarked for environmental protection and sustainable development initiatives.

According to the budget, the cess will be levied on stone crushers, coke-based industries, brick kilns, transfers of second-hand vehicles, commercial extraction of groundwater, and other environmentally sensitive industries and activities that may be notified by the government.

The government said the revenue generated through the Green Cess will be utilised for afforestation, pollution control, biodiversity conservation, climate adaptation, promotion of green energy, water resource management, and the creation of other environmentally sustainable infrastructure.

The move is aimed at encouraging environmentally responsible practices while creating a dedicated funding mechanism for conservation and climate resilience projects across the state.
