GUWAHATI: A female deputy inspector was allegedly pushed and manhandled while on duty in Dibrugarh on Monday, June 29, in a shocking attack on a uniformed officer responding to a property dispute complaint.
The officer, identified as Deputy Inspector Rumi Khakhlari, had gone to a residence on Shantipara Puja Road to investigate a property dispute case at the house of Om Prakash Gupta when the incident occurred.
According to local sources, three daughters of Om Prakash Gupta were involved in the assault on the officer. Khakhlari was allegedly pushed and manhandled during the altercation at the premises. The circumstances that led to the attack are under investigation.
In a separate and more alarming development, local sources claim that the officer's firearm was also snatched during the incident, though this has not been officially confirmed.
While talking to GPlus, the Officer-in-Charge of Dibrugarh Police Station, confirmed that swift action followed the incident.
"We have detained four people in connection to the case," the OC said. "An FIR will be filed soon."
It is not yet clear whether all four detained individuals are family members of Om Prakash Gupta or whether others were also involved.
The assault on a female officer while she was discharging her official duty has drawn sharp concern. Attacking or obstructing a public servant on duty is a cognizable offence under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and if the allegation of the firearm being snatched is confirmed, it would significantly escalate the severity of charges against the accused.
