High-Level Committee on Demographic Changes to Visit States and UTs for Ground-Level Assessment


 

GUWAHATI: The High-Level Committee on Demographic Changes called on Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation, Shri Amit Shah, at his residence in New Delhi on July 1, 2026, for a courtesy meeting to brief him on the committee's work plan and progress.

During the meeting, the committee informed the Home Minister about its decision to visit various States and Union Territories to gather firsthand, ground-level details from state governments and UT administrations. The committee also shared its plan to interact with various ministries of the Central Government to receive feedback on subjects related to demographic changes. It further informed the Home Minister that a detailed questionnaire has been prepared to collect relevant information from States and UTs in advance, so as to make the field visits more meaningful and interactive.

Appreciating the strategy formulated by the High-Level Committee, Shri Amit Shah directed the Home Secretary to provide all possible assistance to the committee in its day-to-day working and during its visits to States and UTs. The Home Minister also urged the committee to submit its recommendations at the earliest.

The High-Level Committee was constituted by the Government of India following Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi's announcement of the "High-Powered Demography Mission" on August 15, 2025. The committee is mandated to scientifically assess demographic changes occurring in various parts of the country due to illegal immigration and other abnormal reasons, analyse their causes, and recommend appropriate policy, legislative, and administrative measures.

Justice Prakash Prabhakar Navlekar (Retired) is the Chairman of the committee. Its members include the Census Commissioner, Shri Durga Shankar Mishra (Retired IAS), Shri Balaji Srivastava (Retired IPS), and Dr. Shamika Ravi, member of the Prime Minister's Economic Advisory Council (PMEAC).
