India’s Non-Fossil Power Capacity Crosses 300 GW Milestone in July 2026

GUWAHATI: India has crossed the 300 GW milestone in installed non-fossil fuel-based electricity generation capacity, reaching 300.50 GW as of July 31, 2026, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) said on Sunday, August 9.

The achievement takes India past 60% of its target of achieving 500 GW of non-fossil fuel-based installed electricity capacity by 2030. Non-fossil sources now account for more than 54% of the country’s total installed electricity generation capacity, which stands at around 552 GW.

Solar power accounts for the largest share of India’s non-fossil capacity at 164.59 GW, followed by wind power at 58.14 GW and hydropower, including large and small projects, at 57.24 GW. Bio-power contributes 11.75 GW, while nuclear power accounts for 8.78 GW.

The government said the milestone reflects India’s accelerating clean energy transition and its efforts to strengthen energy security, domestic manufacturing and long-term energy resilience.

India added a record 55.29 GW of non-fossil fuel-based capacity during 2025-26, including 44.6 GW of solar power and 6 GW of wind power.

Solar power has emerged as the primary driver of India’s renewable energy expansion, with installed capacity increasing from 2.8 GW in 2014 to 164.59 GW as of July 31, 2026. Wind power capacity has risen from 21 GW in 2014 to 58.14 GW during the same period.

The expansion has also contributed to a significant increase in renewable electricity generation. Renewable energy generation rose from 190.96 billion units in 2014-15 to 477.79 billion units in 2025-26.

The government has simultaneously focused on strengthening domestic renewable energy manufacturing. The capacity enlisted under the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers for Solar PV Modules has crossed 200 GW, compared with 2.3 GW in 2014.

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy is also implementing the National Green Hydrogen Mission to promote industrial decarbonisation and develop India as a global hub for the production, use and export of green hydrogen and its derivatives.
