GUWAHATI: Hareswar Deka, a man in his mid-30s, lost his life following an alleged assault by a group of transgenders in Guwahati's Bhootnath locality.
The incident occurred on the night of Sunday, July 12.
Passersby found Deka unconscious and bleeding near a culvert in the area. He was immediately taken to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) for treatment but did not survive, passing away around 6 AM on Monday.
An investigation is now underway, with police working to track down those responsible. Initial findings point to a late-night altercation involving a group of transgenders that broke out around midnight on Sunday.
Speaking to GPlus, an official from Bharalumukh Police Station said, "the exact number of people involved is not known yet but the offenders will soon be apprehended."
Locals have also raised concerns about whether the neighborhood's CCTV cameras were operational during the incident, arguing that any recovered footage could play a key role in the probe.
Hareshwar Deka, father of two, reportedly passed on important information about the incident before passing away at GMCH.
News of the attack has stirred anger in the community, with residents calling for tough action against the perpetrators and pressing police to improve security in the locality.
