Police made his wife Sonam the main accused in Raja Raghuvanshi’s murder case. A lower court in Shillong recently granted bail to Sonam Raghuvanshi. The Meghalaya High Court also upheld his bail. The Meghalaya government has approached the Supreme Court challenging the decision of the High Court. They demanded immediate cancellation of Sonam’s bail.
Counsel for the Meghalaya government and Union Solicitor General Tushar Mehta requested the retired bench of the Supreme Court to hear the case urgently. The court granted the petition. The case is likely to be heard on Friday.
Tushar Mehta told the court that Sonam was not informed about the reason for her arrest and the court granted her bail only on this basis. But this is due to some typographical error. Tushar argued in court that no one can be granted bail for this reason alone. He claimed that Sonam can run away if he gets bail.
In May 2025, Raja and Sonam went on their honeymoon in Meghalaya’s East Khasi Hills. Suddenly two people disappear from Sohra. The family approached the police. The police launched a search and a few days later recovered Raja’s body from a ditch. Still no one doubted Sonam. Later he was arrested by the police. He was detained after questioning. As the investigation progresses, the mystery thickens. Sonam allegedly conspired to kill Raja with the help of her boyfriend Raj Kushwaha and three others. The police arrested them one by one. The police filed a 790-page chargesheet against the five accused – Sonam, Raj, Vishal, Akash and Anand.
East Khasi Hills District and Satra Court’s Legal Aid Cell fought Sonam’s case. Sonam told the court that she would fully cooperate with the investigation. Police told the court that after killing Raja, Sonam changed several routes from Shillong to Indore. There she stayed at her boyfriend Raj Kushwaha’s house for 3-4 days. After 3-4 days Raj took Sonam to a flat in Dewas in Indore.
On reaching there, Sonam opens the mobile SIM and gives it to Raj. Raj arranges a new SIM card for her. However, despite all this, Sonam could not hide for long. The police arrested them. Based on Sonam’s information, other accused were also arrested one by one.
