The directive comes amid prevailing hot and humid weather conditions across the region. School authorities have been asked to continue following the government-approved uniform policy and take necessary measures in the interest of students' well-being.
Schools were advised to relax the compulsory use of neckties, blazers, waistcoats and other non-essential uniform accessories during the summer months. The order also permitted students to wear half-sleeve shirts where feasible and in accordance with the prescribed uniform pattern.
In addition, schools were asked to show flexibility regarding the use of socks and closed shoes during periods of extreme heat and humidity.
Authorities further encouraged the use of light, breathable and comfortable clothing materials suitable for prevailing climatic conditions.
The advisory also directed schools to ensure the availability of safe drinking water and proper ventilation in classrooms and school premises. Teachers and school authorities were urged to prioritise the health, safety and comfort of students over the strict enforcement of uniform norms.
However, in a clarification issued on June 18, District Elementary Education Officer and District Mission Coordinator Tapan Kr. Kalita stated that the advisory was meant only to provide reasonable seasonal relaxation in the use of accessories such as neckties, waistcoats, socks and similar items during periods of excessive heat.
It further emphasised that the prescribed government school uniform must continue to be worn by all students and should not be discontinued under any circumstances.
Heads of institutions have been instructed to ensure proper implementation of the prescribed uniform norms while extending only such seasonal relaxations as deemed necessary to help students cope with extreme weather conditions.
