Residents of Guwahati's Gandhi Basti Battle Bad Road, Overflowing Drain

GUWAHATI: Residents of Anu Baruah Path in Gandhi Basti, Sarania Hills, are struggling with a broken road and an overflowing open drain that has made daily life difficult in the locality.

The drain running along the lane remains clogged and unmaintained. During rain, dirty drain water spills onto the road, leaving residents with no choice but to walk through the slush.

A local shopkeeper said GMC workers visit occasionally to collect garbage, but the drain remains the core issue. "People from GMC sometimes come and collect the garbage but the drain is the main problem," he said.

Locals say the problem got worse after a road connecting Anu Baruah Path to Masjid Road was constructed. The new road blocked natural water flow, leaving rainwater with nowhere to drain. "When the road connecting Anu Baruah Path to Masjid Road was constructed the problem worsened. Now the water collected during rain has no place to go and is collected here. The drain water comes over the street," said a resident.

The stench from the drain has become a daily irritant for those living along the stretch. "The odour is unbearable," said a local tenant.

Residents are calling on the Guwahati Municipal Corporation to take up proper drainage work and road repair rather than one-off garbage collection drives.

The lane connects Lalmati Road on the west and Sabun Factory Road on the east and sees regular foot and vehicle movement, making the poor condition of the stretch a concern for a wider section of commuters as well.
