The flood situation in Assam is worsening and the death toll has risen to 10 as per the latest information. The floods hit Shibsagar, Charideo and Jorhat districts of southern Assam the worst and inundated several villages, disrupting normal life.
Among the affected districts, Sibsagar district is the worst hit with 1,57,727 affected. The floods affected 1,04,415 people in Charideo district and 50,987 in Jorhat district. Many villages in these districts are still under water.
The water levels of rivers in the state are currently at a dangerous level. The water level of Brahmaputra at Nimatighat, Budhidihing at Chenimari in Khawang, Dichang at Nangalmuraghat and Dhansiri (South) at Numaligarh is above danger level. The Dikhow river in Sibsagar has crossed the maximum flood level, breaking all previous records, posing a serious risk of flooding new areas if the rains continue.
Rescue and relief operations are going on throughout the day in the flood affected areas. According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), 101 relief camps and relief distribution centers are currently being operated in the affected districts, sheltering 9,606 homeless people. Teams from the National Disaster Response Force, State Disaster Response Force, Army, Fire and Emergency Services, Civil Defense and District Administration have so far rescued 6,710 people using 51 boats.
Floods also caused extensive damage to public infrastructure. A total of 29 roads are under water and six dams have collapsed in Jorhat district, posing a new threat to nearby villages.
Authorities are continuously monitoring river levels in several parts of Assam as heavy rains are forecast in the coming days. People living in potentially dangerous areas are urged to be vigilant and strictly follow government guidelines issued by the administration.
