GUWAHATI: A theft attempt was reported at the Ramayani Sahitya Research Institute, the research centre dedicated to Jnanpith Award-winning Assamese author Mamoni Raisom Goswami, in Guwahati during the early hours of Thursday, August 13.

The incident took place at the institute located at House No. 23, Bye Lane No. 6, Mamoni Raisom Goswami Path in the Notun Sarania area of Gandhi Basti. According to preliminary reports, an unidentified intruder allegedly broke a window to gain entry into the premises and rummaged through several rooms.
The break-in came to light when an institute employee spotted the accused inside the building. The intruder immediately fled the scene, prompting the authorities to alert the police.
Speaking to GPlus, the Officer-in-Charge of Chandmari Police Station said the incident occurred at around 4 am. He confirmed that although the accused managed to enter the research centre, no valuables or archival materials were stolen.
"We do not have CCTV footage of the incident, but we have arrested one person. Further investigation is underway," the OC said.
The Ramayani Sahitya Research Institute preserves manuscripts, books, documents and other materials related to Mamoni Raisom Goswami's life and literary legacy. The attempted theft has raised concerns over the security of the institution and the protection of its valuable collections.
Police are continuing their investigation to ascertain the motive behind the attempted theft and assess whether any damage was caused to the institute's property.
