South African international Jaden Adams has died at the age of 35. The country’s sports ministry confirmed his death on Saturday (July 11). However, the exact cause of the untimely death is yet to be officially announced.

Football circles in South Africa were stunned as the news broke. Adams’ performance for the country in the World Cup caught attention. Such a death halted the career of a rising star.

South Africa made history by reaching the knockout stage for the first time in this World Cup. Adams was one of the heroes of this success. He played three matches in the group stage. He got a chance in the first XI against Mexico and Czech Republic.

He then impressed as a substitute in a 1–0 win against South Korea. However, they could not break that trend in the knockout stage. Defeat to Canada shattered African dreams.

As the tournament progressed, a personal tragedy struck Adams. His grandmother died just one day before the Czech Republic match. Adams was dismissed after the first half of that match. Personal grief was intense. Yet, despite everything, he continued to fight for his country.

Adams has enjoyed success in club football as well as internationally. Jayden appeared in the Stellenbosch FC youth academy. He joined Mamelodi Sundowns in January last year. He won the CAF Champions League for Pretoria in the 2025–26 season.

Adams made his debut for the national team in 2022 against Mozambique. He played a total of 13 matches for the country. He scored two crucial goals in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. At the age of 25, he became one of the best midfielders in the country.

The death of the young talent has cast a shadow of mourning across the entire sports world. “South African football has lost a talented player,” the South African Football Players’ Union said in a statement. Adams was a proud servant of the sport. A young talent who still had a lot to offer.’

Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie also expressed his condolences. “His family, teammates and millions of fans, who watched him grow from a young academy talent to a Bafana Bafana international footballer, the entire country mourns with them today,” he said.

“My, FIFA and the world football community’s condolences go out to his family, friends and teammates,” FIFA president Gianni Infantino wrote in a condolence message on Instagram.
