Unused Traffic Booth at Guwahati's Paltan Bazar Turns into Garbage Dump, Raises Civic Concerns

GUWAHATI: An unused traffic police booth located at the Nepali Mandir intersection in Guwahati's Paltan Bazar has reportedly turned into a garbage dumping spot, triggering concerns among local residents over cleanliness and civic maintenance.

Speaking to GPlus, a traffic official from Paltan Police Station said the booth is no longer being used for traffic management due to operational challenges at the busy junction. According to the official, the intersection experiences heavy congestion, with vehicles moving from three different directions simultaneously.

"We do not use that booth because it becomes difficult to manage traffic while standing there. The junction remains heavily congested, and positioning personnel in the middle could create further confusion and disruption," the official said.

On the issue of garbage accumulation around the structure, the official stated that Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) sanitation workers visit the area regularly. However, the dumping of waste continues, leading to the deteriorating condition of the booth and its surroundings.

Ward councillor Ratna Singh told GPlus that the matter has already been brought to the attention of the concerned department and that corrective measures are expected to be taken soon.

"I have informed the concerned department about the issue, and necessary steps will be taken shortly. At the same time, residents also need to act responsibly and refrain from dumping garbage in public spaces," Singh said.

The situation has also drawn attention to several other traffic booths across the city that remain unused and, in some cases, have become hotspots for garbage dumping and other undesirable activities, highlighting the need for better maintenance and utilisation of public infrastructure.
