GUWAHATI: A woman was found dead under mysterious circumstances at a rented accommodation in Guwahati's Hatigaon area on Wednesday evening, June 10, prompting a police investigation.
The deceased has been identified as Sushmita Basumatary, aged 29, who hailed from Udalguri district in Assam and was engaged in a private job.
According to law enforcement authorities, Basumatary's boyfriend, Akash Prasad, who originally hails from Imphal but is currently residing in Guwahati’s Solapara area and managing a family-owned hotel, has been arrested and is currently in police custody in connection with the case.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the couple had reportedly been involved in frequent disputes during their one-year long relationship. Police officials stated that Prasad was allegedly involved in a relationship with another woman, which had become a reason of conflict between the couple.
"The deceased and Prasad were having disputes. During the investigation, we also found photographs of another woman on his mobile phone," a police official said while speaking to GPlus.
The official further stated that the case may be one of abetment to suicide.
Basumatary's body was discovered at the rented accommodation on Wednesday evening. Following the incident, a case was registered at Hatigaon Police Station, and an investigation was launched to ascertain the circumstances leading to her death.
