Assam cabinet expansion to be held on June 5; The Prime Minister said that the country’s economy is growing faster than expected

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sharma today (May 31) announced that the state cabinet would be expanded in June, ending speculation about the formation of a BJP-led NDA government.

“I am pleased to announce that the Cabinet of Ministers of the Government of Assam will be expanded on June 5, 2026,” Sharma announced on social media X.

The announcement comes within a month of Sharma’s second consecutive term as chief minister following the NDA’s victory in the 2026 assembly elections. He had earlier hinted that the cabinet expansion would take place after the end of the assembly session and in the first week of June.

The current cabinet was sworn in on May 12, with Chief Minister Sharma and a limited number of ministers taking oath initially. Further, several departments are directly under the chief minister, which increases the possibility of cabinet expansion and new inductees.

Political observers expect a mix of seasoned leaders and new faces in the expansion of the BJP and its alliance partners. However, the chief minister did not name the possible candidates for the ministry

Before forming the new government, Sharma indicated that the Assam cabinet may eventually have around 18 to 19 ministers but the final expansion will be decided in consultation with the party leadership.
