GUWAHATI: The Assam government has instructed all departments to refrain from transferring officials appointed as enumerators and supervisors for the 2027 Census until they complete their assigned responsibilities, citing the need to ensure smooth conduct of the nationwide exercise.

The directive was issued by the General Administration Department (GAD) after the Lakhimpur district administration reported that several teachers engaged in census work had been transferred despite completing mandatory training and being assigned House Listing Blocks.
According to the GAD, the teachers had already undergone census training and were allotted House Listing Blocks under different census charges in Lakhimpur district. Their transfer at this stage, the department said, could disrupt preparations for the first phase of the census, which includes house listing and housing-related activities, as well as the subsequent population enumeration phase.
In a communication to the School Education Department, the GAD emphasised that continuity of trained census personnel is essential for the successful implementation of the exercise. It also noted that the Assam government had previously instructed all administrative departments not to transfer employees assigned to census duties until the completion of the census.
The latest direction follows an advisory from the Office of the Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India, which urged states to ensure that enumerators and supervisors remain in their designated posts throughout the census process.
The GAD has asked the School Education Department to issue necessary instructions so that all officials appointed as enumerators and supervisors for Census 2027 continue in their current postings until they have completed their census-related responsibilities.
