GUWAHATI: Floods continue to affect large parts of Assam, with 11 districts remaining inundated and the cumulative death toll rising to 47, according to the latest flood bulletin issued by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) on Thursday, July 23.
The bulletin stated that the floods have affected 883 villages across the state, impacting a total of 7,21,024 people. Authorities are continuing relief and rescue operations as several areas remain waterlogged due to overflowing rivers and persistent rainfall.
To support those displaced by the floods, the state government has set up 103 relief camps, which are currently sheltering 24,124 people. In addition, 255 relief distribution centres are functioning across the affected districts to provide essential supplies, including food, drinking water and other relief materials, to flood-hit families.
The disaster has also taken a heavy toll on the agricultural sector. According to the ASDMA report, 25,375.44 hectares of cropland have been damaged by floodwaters, raising concerns over crop losses and the impact on farmers in the affected districts.
The ASDMA said state agencies and district administrations are continuing rescue, relief and rehabilitation efforts in the affected areas. Authorities have urged residents living in vulnerable and low-lying areas to remain alert, follow official advisories and avoid venturing into flooded locations unless absolutely necessary.
As floodwaters persist in several districts, officials are closely monitoring the situation and coordinating relief measures to ensure timely assistance reaches affected communities.
Moreover, the ASDMA has issued orange alerts for parts of Sivasagar district following a continuous rise in the water levels of the Disang and Dikhow rivers.
According to the advisory, the water level of the Disang River at Nanglamoraghat has been rising, prompting authorities to urge residents to stay away from the river and avoid venturing into vulnerable areas. Citizens have also been advised to remain vigilant and strictly follow official advisories.
A separate orange alert has also been issued for the Dikhow River in Sivasagar, where water levels continue to rise. The ASDMA has cautioned people against going near the river and advised those living in low-lying areas along the riverbank to avoid unnecessary movement and take all necessary precautions.
The authority has urged residents to closely monitor updates issued by district authorities and disaster management agencies as the flood situation remains under watch.
