Assam Rifles hosted the screening of Weaves of Empathy: A Journey into Naga Oral History, a documentary by Project Empathy, at Headquarters Directorate General Assam Rifles (HQ DGAR), Laitkor, on Saturday, July 25.
The documentary, conceptualised by Project Empathy founder Vibha Lakhera and directed by Parasher Baruah, explores the oral traditions, resilience and cultural heritage of the Naga people through the experiences of community elders and younger generations. It focuses on the role of storytelling in promoting empathy, reconciliation and preservation of indigenous heritage.
The screening was attended by Air Marshal Inderpal Singh Walia, AVSM, VM, Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Eastern Air Command, as the chief guest, along with Lt Gen Vikas Lakhera, AVSM, SM, Director General Assam Rifles, senior officers of the Indian Army and Assam Rifles, media personnel, students, families and distinguished citizens of Shillong.
The event also featured the first public performance of Walk With Me by the Assam Rifles Public School Choir under the direction of music teacher Mahai. The song, which emerged from Project Empathy’s Naga Oral History Project: Stories of Empathy, highlighted compassion, resilience and the importance of standing with others without judgement.
The screening was followed by discussions on preserving oral histories and strengthening mutual understanding. Vibha Lakhera spoke about the importance of storytelling in building empathy and social cohesion. Assam Rifles said the event reflected its continued commitment to preserving the cultural heritage of the Northeast and promoting dialogue, understanding and national integration through community engagement.
