The Supreme Court has agreed to hear a case filed by the Kakroach Janata Party (KJP) alleging police brutality and over-activity during its parliamentary campaign. Not just the parliamentary campaign, there have also been incidents of NEET scam and police brutality during protests across the country demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. A bench headed by Chief Justice Surya Kant said the cases will be heard on Monday.
Advocate Gopal Sankaranarayan raised the issue of police use of force during the raid in Parliament before the Chief Justice’s bench on Friday afternoon. He told the court that student protests have led to violence across the country. Police used indiscriminate force against protesters, requiring court intervention. Two formal petitions have been filed in this regard and the respective states have also become parties. The Chief Justice ordered the case to be listed for hearing on Monday.
A few days ago, a lawyer wanted to show the Chief Justice’s bench the video of police baton and teargas firing during the parliamentary campaign. But the Chief Justice refused to watch the video and asked not to waste time. The Delhi High Court has already sought a response from the police on the same issue.
The Supreme Court has also taken a strict stand against defamation of court by posting sensitive scenes of the trial on social media. The court made it clear that the court is not a 24-hour entertainment channel. Therefore, no audio or video of the trial can be posted on social media without the permission of the court.
