GUWAHATI: Gauhati University has introduced an Undergraduate Minor Degree in Quantum Technology from the 2026–27 academic session, becoming the first higher education institution in Northeast India to offer such a programme.

The programme has been launched in line with the National Quantum Mission of the Department of Science and Technology and follows the Model Curriculum developed jointly by the Department of Science and Technology and the All India Council for Technical Education under the National Education Policy 2020.
The six-semester, 18-credit programme will be offered alongside regular B.Tech and B.E. programmes. Engineering students will be eligible to enrol from their third semester and continue the course until the eighth semester.
The curriculum covers key areas such as quantum computing, quantum communication, quantum cryptography, quantum sensing, semiconductor technologies, and the quantum internet. The programme aims to equip students with skills required for emerging careers in quantum technologies, a field expected to play a growing role in sectors including computing, healthcare, defence, finance, and scientific research.
The programme will be coordinated by the Department of Physics, with academic support from faculty across technical departments and experts from IIT Guwahati.
