GUWAHATI: In a bid to tackle the recurring problem of artificial flooding in Guwahati, the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) on Tuesday July 21 carried out a ground inspection of several flood-affected areas across the city.
The inspection was led by Assam Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Kaushik Rai and included New Guwahati MLA Diplu Ranjan Sarma, Mayor Mrigen Sarania along with other departmental engineers.
The team visited Last Gate, Barbari, Silsako, Juripar, Six Mile, and adjoining localities, where waterlogging has affected residents following recent spells of heavy rain.
During the visit, the officials interacted with local residents to understand the challenges they are facing and assessed the situation on the ground. They also reviewed the progress of ongoing drainage and flood mitigation works in the affected areas.
According to the GMC, discussions focused on strengthening the city’s drainage infrastructure and implementing long-term measures to reduce artificial flooding, a recurring issue in several parts of Guwahati during the monsoon season.
“Addressing artificial flooding remains a top priority for the Guwahati Municipal Corporation,” the civic body said, adding that it remains committed to making Guwahati safer, more resilient, and better prepared for future monsoons.
