The US and Iran have taken historic steps to end their longstanding conflict. US President Donald Trump made a big claim in this situation. He said Iran has promised never to develop nuclear weapons. The two countries have signed a preliminary memorandum of understanding, which is considered an important milestone towards lasting peace.
In a speech at the G-7 summit in France, President Trump said Iran had agreed never to have nuclear weapons again. Vice President J.D. Vance supported Trump’s statement, saying that preventing Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon during a conflict is one of his administration’s primary goals. “President Trump has been clear from the beginning that Iran will not have a nuclear weapon,” Vance said on Social Media X.
However, the most talked about issue in the peace process is the $300 billion economic package. The Trump administration has denied direct payment, but an Iranian news agency claimed Iran was seeking $300 billion in aid for war reparations. Tehran said this included the release of $24 billion in seized Iranian assets. Western media, on the other hand, interpreted the money not as direct reparations, but as an international investment and reconstruction program.
Meanwhile, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian called the agreement an important step towards peace. However, he clarified that the details of the final peace deal are still under negotiation. The deal is due to be formalized in Geneva next week. The future of Iran-backed regional armed groups and the conditions for lifting sanctions on Iran are at the center of the discussion. Although there are political and economic debates over the entire issue, the initial consensus between the two countries ended the long conflict and created a new equation in world politics.
