GUWHATI: A third-year BTech student of the Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE) department at the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati died in a drowning incident near Lathia Bagicha Ghat on Saturday evening, August 1, the institute said in a statement issued on Sunday.

The student’s identity has not been disclosed. IIT Guwahati expressed deep grief over the loss and extended condolences to the family and friends. The institute said it is providing all possible support to the family during this difficult time.
Police authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. IIT Guwahati said it is in communication with the student’s parents and is extending full cooperation to the authorities.
The institute has urged students, faculty and staff to prioritise personal safety during the monsoon and avoid visiting hazardous locations, particularly water bodies. It also said additional safety advisories and communication measures will be strengthened to prevent such incidents.
