Residents of Jyotikuchi’s 2 No. Karbi Path raise concerns over road conditions, drainage and waste issues
The 2 No. Karbi Path connecting Jyotikuchi Budh Bazar to ISBT and Maniram Dewan Trade Centre in Guwahati continues to face civic issues, with residents complaining about pothole-ridden stretches, prolonged waterlogging and garbage accumulation along the roadside.

The road, which connects the Lokhra-Lalganesh Road with ISBT and Maniram Dewan Trade Centre, has become a major concern for residents and commuters due to its deteriorating condition. Locals said the situation worsens after rainfall, with stagnant water remaining on the road for several days due to the absence of a proper drainage system.
The area also hosts a weekly market every Wednesday. Residents alleged that after the market concludes, waste generated from the market, including vegetables, fruits, poultry waste and other discarded materials, is not cleared properly. They said the waste remains scattered along the road, creating difficulties for commuters, particularly in the days following the market.
Garbage accumulation along the roadside has raised concerns among residents over hygiene. Locals said the waste creates an unhygienic environment and could increase the risk of health problems.
Residents further complained about foul smells during rainfall, as rainwater mixes with the accumulated waste and stagnant water on the roadside.
Another concern raised by locals is the impact on the Bashistha River. Residents alleged that garbage dumped in the area is carried into the river during rainfall, contributing to pollution and affecting the surrounding environment.
The affected stretch falls under Ward No. 22. Residents said that despite repeated concerns, no visible improvement has been seen regarding road repair and waste management in the area.
One male resident said, “The condition of this road is very poor. After every spell of rain, rainwater remains stagnant on the road for many days. This happens because there is no proper drainage system.”
He said, “This is the road from Lokhra to Lalganesh, in front of Budh Bazaar. It leads to Jyotikuchi L.P. School, ISBT and Maniram Dewan Trade Centre. The road is known as 2 No. Karbi Path and connects ISBT with the Lokhra-Lalganesh Road.”
“We have not seen any action from the authorities. Before the election, PWD measured the road and prepared an estimate, but after that, nothing happened,” he added.
The resident further claimed that accidents involving bikes and scooters take place frequently due to water stagnation on the road.
“Accidents involving bikes and scooters have become frequent due to water stagnation on the road. Even after the rain stops, the water remains on the road for 15 to 20 days,” he said.
He also claimed that one person suffered a serious back injury in an accident and remains bedridden.
A female resident from Jyotikuchi, Dhopolia, said, “You can see that this road is very dirty. GMC always collects Rs. 100 from the vendors in Budh Bazaar every day, but they never clean the road.”
She added, “My family and I have been living in this area for almost 20 years, but we have not seen anybody repairing this road. We always clean our surroundings ourselves, but the condition of this area remains the same.”
Another female resident said the road has never been cleaned properly for a long time.
“After GMC started dumping garbage here, the road became worse. Earlier, the road was not in such bad condition, but now there is a very bad smell in the area,” she said.
“We need a proper drainage system and a good road,” she added.
An elderly resident questioned the lack of repair work, saying, “Raja Maharaja passes through this road, but the question is: when will this road be repaired or rebuilt?”
PWD official told GPlus, “We have sent the estimate for the road work to the head office. The work will begin after the estimate receives sanction. However, we are not aware whether the file has reached the Secretariat or not.”
Ward No. 22 councillor Smita Roy said, “Garbage management in the Budh Bazar area is handled by the market committee. We are planning to create permanent vending zones in the area, after which we will take over the responsibility of managing the area.”
The ongoing issues surrounding road conditions and waste management in Jyotikuchi Budh Bazar have raised concerns among residents over the maintenance of civic infrastructure in the area.
With the road serving as an important link to ISBT, Maniram Dewan Trade Centre and nearby residential areas, residents said they are awaiting timely intervention from the concerned authorities to address the issues related to road repair, drainage and waste management.
