GUWAHATI: A full emergency was declared at Chennai Airport for an IndiGo flight from Kolkata after the aircraft developed a left engine failure shortly before landing, the Chennai Airport Authority said on Wednesday, August 12.

IndiGo flight 6E-723, operating from Kolkata to Chennai with 224 people on board, declared a full emergency at 11:29 PM on August 11, according to Airports Authority of India (AAI) officials.
Following the declaration, necessary emergency response arrangements were put in place to facilitate the safe arrival of the aircraft.
The flight was scheduled to arrive at Chennai at 11:30 PM but was expected to land at around 11:37 PM when the emergency was declared.
According to reports, the pilot noticed that the aircraft's left engine had failed while preparing for landing and alerted air traffic control. Airport authorities subsequently activated emergency response measures to facilitate the aircraft's safe landing.
The full emergency was formally withdrawn at 11:47 PM, and all operations at Chennai Airport returned to normal, the airport authority said.
Confirming the incident, an IndiGo spokesperson said the airline followed standard operating procedures after the technical issue was detected.
“IndiGo flight 6E 723, operating from Kolkata to Chennai on August 11, 2026, experienced a technical snag shortly before landing in Chennai. Following standard operating procedures, all relevant authorities were immediately informed and the pilots made a priority landing at the Chennai International
Airport,” the spokesperson said.
