International Yoga Day is recognized in this US state; Yoga message for foreigners

Yoga has gained significant recognition abroad. Delaware Governor Matthew Meyer has officially declared June 21, 2026 as ‘International Day of Yoga’ urging the citizens of his state to embrace yoga and take steps towards a healthy lifestyle.

In the official announcement, the Delaware mayor described yoga as an ancient Indian tradition that dates back 5,000 years. He says yoga brings balance between mind, body and spirit. It helps in improving health. According to the Delaware governor, yoga not only improves physical strength, but also helps maintain mental clarity and emotional balance.

Amidst the adversities and stresses of modern life, yoga offers people an effective way to achieve better mental health and live a balanced life, the mayor said. He also added that yoga also promotes health, peace and unity in society.

“I, Matthew Meyer, Governor of the State of Delaware, proclaim June 21, 2026 as International Yoga Day. I encourage all people to embrace the practice for a healthy lifestyle,” the governor said in recognition of International Yoga Day.

He also recalled that in 2014, the United Nations recognized June 21 as International Yoga Day to raise awareness about the benefits of yoga around the world. The proposal was made by India and a record 175 countries supported yoga.

The Indian American Community of Delaware and the Indian Consulate in New York are organizing a Yoga Day event in Delaware. The purpose of these programs is to connect people through messages of health, peace and social unity.

Meanwhile, a grand event is being organized at New York’s famous Times Square on the occasion of International Yoga Day. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s yoga guru HR Nagendra presided over the event. The event was organized by the Indian Embassy.
