Amid ongoing protests, tension flared again at New Delhi’s Jantar Mantar on Wednesday. At least five policemen were injured when some protesters pelted stones at the police, Delhi Police alleged. Later, the police resorted to baton charge and tear gas to bring the situation under control.
According to the police, the protesters tried to break the barricade and pelted stones at the police. Several policemen including two ACP officers were injured in the incident. As a result, additional security forces were deployed in the area.
Following the incident, internet services were temporarily suspended around central Delhi’s Jantar Mantar to maintain law and order. The decision has been taken to prevent the spread of rumors and provocative messages, the police said.
The CJP denied the allegations, saying the police were the first to resort to force and used lathicharge and tear gas to quell the peaceful protests. The union called the police action “excessive force” and announced it would continue its protests.
