GUWAHATI: Heavy rainfall in Guwahati has triggered landslides in the Swargapur area of Basistha and Khanapara, bordering Meghalaya. No injuries or fatalities were reported in the incidents.
Similar landslide incidents were reported from several other parts of the city, including Kahilipara, Maligaon, Lal Ganesh and Kharghuli.
However, Swargapur remained one of the worst-affected areas, with residents raising concerns over recurring landslides in the locality.
Speaking to GPlus, residents said they fear further damage if heavy rainfall continues.
“We fear that if another landslide occurs, it could damage our entire house, posing a serious risk to us and the entire locality,” a Swargapur resident said.
A Khanapara resident alleged that unscientific construction and hill cutting in the nearby areas had worsened the situation. “The construction work was not carried out scientifically. We have lost our cattle farm, including our pregnant cows. The irresponsible construction and hill cutting on the Meghalaya side have led to this situation. Fortunately, there has been no damage to human lives,” the resident said.
Meanwhile, the Kamrup Metropolitan District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) has issued a public advisory after landslide incidents were reported from five areas under Guwahati Revenue Circle. The authority urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel in hilly areas.
In a notice issued on Monday, July 20, the DDMA identified the affected areas as Kamakhya Main Road beyond Prashanti Lodge, Kamakhya Colony near Ganesh Mandir, Paschim Kamakhya Gaon near Water Tanker, Pandu Temple Ghat and Madhavdev Nagar in Maligaon.
The DDMA advised residents to remain cautious while travelling through hilly areas of Kamrup Metropolitan district due to the possibility of further landslide incidents.
