GUWAHATI: The Meghalaya government will set up a new Meghalaya House in Kharghar, Navi Mumbai, to meet the growing demand for accommodation among people from the state travelling to Mumbai for medical treatment, education, official work, business and tourism.
The foundation stone for the facility was jointly laid by Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma and Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on August 8, following the formal handover of land by the City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO), Government of Maharashtra.
The proposed Meghalaya House will be built on 2,071.67 square metres of land and is expected to provide increased accommodation capacity for visitors from Meghalaya, particularly patients and their attendants travelling to Mumbai for treatment.
Meghalaya’s existing state guest house at Vashi, established in 2008, has 12 rooms and has been facing growing demand. It is frequently used by patients and attendants visiting Tata Memorial Hospital, as well as students, government officials, entrepreneurs, sportspersons and tourists from the state.
The new facility in Kharghar is expected to provide additional accommodation and support facilities for Meghalaya residents visiting Mumbai, helping the state meet the increasing demand for a dedicated place to stay.
The Kharghar location also offers strategic advantages, with the area developing as a hub for technology, innovation and data centres. The Meghalaya government said the new facility would serve as a support centre for people from the state while strengthening ties between Meghalaya and Maharashtra.
The project is being developed through cooperation between the two state governments, with CIDCO facilitating the land for the proposed facility.
The new Meghalaya House is expected to strengthen Meghalaya’s support infrastructure outside the state and provide greater assistance to citizens travelling to Mumbai, particularly for healthcare, education and employment-related purposes.
