The Trinamool Congress’ internal crisis is intensifying. One MP after another has resigned from the party. On June 10, the party’s Rajya Sabha MP Sushmita Deo resigned from the Upper House. It is the second resignation in a week amid internal wrangling in the party. Former Congress Lok Sabha MP Sushmita Dey joined Trinamool Congress in 2021 after losing the 2019 elections. He later served as the party’s national spokesperson and was elected to the Rajya Sabha.
Senior Trinamool Congress leader and Rajya Sabha MP Sukhendu Shekhar Roy also left the Upper House and the party days before Sushmita Dev’s resignation. Roy resigned citing corruption in party affairs, administrative failure and growing public discontent.
At the time of writing, sources said Sayani Ghosh has also resigned from the Trinamool Congress. The resignation of senior leaders has once again highlighted the sharp differences within the Mamata Banerjee-led party. According to reports, the crisis is not confined to state assemblies but has also extended to Parliament, with a section of Trinamool MPs expressing displeasure with the party leadership.
In his resignation letter submitted earlier this week, Sukhendu Shekhar Roy alleged that people rejected the party due to corruption, governance failures, law and order problems and atrocities against women. He was also seen appreciating the development initiatives taken by the newly elected BJP government in the state.
The exit of Sushmita Dev and Sayani Ghosh is expected to further weaken the party’s strength in the Rajya Sabha as the Trinamool Congress is already going through a major political crisis due to the ongoing electoral crisis and infighting within the party. Sushmita De’s resignation and meeting with the Assam Chief Minister almost confirmed her joining the BJP.
As of the time of writing, no official statement has been issued by the Trinamool Congress leadership regarding the exact reason for the resignation.
