Rural Roads Near Digaru Choked as Motorists Bypass Highway Diversions

GUWAHATI: Village roads in the Digaru–Topangtoli area are experiencing heavy, slow-moving traffic in the early part of Monday, July 13, as commuters seek alternate routes to avoid diversions on the main highway, according to local residents.

The congestion follows an urgent advisory issued by Guwahati Traffic Police on July 12, which announced diversions after severe waterlogging at 9th Mile and 10th Mile made the stretch impassable for light motor vehicles (LMVs). Under the new arrangement, traffic entering Guwahati is being diverted at Digaru, while outgoing traffic is being routed through Koinadhara Point.

With the highway bottlenecked, many drivers have turned to narrow village roads near Topangtoli to cut through the delays, but the sudden surge in traffic volume has left these rural roads congested as well. A resident living near Topangtoli reported that vehicles are backed up as the informal detour struggles to handle the load meant for a highway.

Guwahati Traffic Police have also recommended the Narengi route as an alternative for motorists heading out of the city and have urged commuters to plan their journeys accordingly. One commuter reported a journey from the airport to Maligaon taking roughly 2.5 hours amid the disruptions.

Authorities have not yet commented on the spillover congestion in the Digaru rural belt.
