Congress leader Sonia Gandhi condemned the Israeli attack on Gaza and the Modi government’s silence on the matter. He said the central government’s silence on the Gaza incident is not only morally wrong but also against the country’s interest. The Congress Parliamentary Party Chairperson claimed that India has distanced itself from historical allies like Palestine, Iran and the Middle East. He said, Pakistan is now trying to take this opportunity to play the role of mediator.
In an article published in the Indian Express newspaper, Sonia Gandhi termed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to Israel as a misguided strategic decision. He said innocent Palestinian children were being brutally targeted and India should speak out against it. He suggested that India should respond to global public opinion against Israeli actions in Gaza and the displacement of Palestinian families in the West Bank.
Gandhi said, Modi government’s silence cannot be accepted under any circumstances. “Israel is trying to destroy the Palestinians in Gaza,” he said, referring to a report by a UN commission. At least 20,000 children were killed and 44,000 injured in Gaza, according to the report of the commission headed by eminent Indian Justice S Muralidhar. In addition, 97 percent of Gaza’s schools and health sector have been completely destroyed.
In the article, he added, the attack by Hamas was unacceptable, but the subsequent brutality of the Israeli military was inhumane. He said that Israel was able to continue the attack because of the support of the US administration of Donald Trump. Many countries of the world like France, Britain, Canada and Australia have recognized Palestine and South Africa has approached the International Court of Justice against Israel. But India did not say anything. He also mentioned the tragic death of 5-year-old Hind Rajab, who was brutally murdered by the Israeli army.
Finally, Sonia Gandhi said, India has sacrificed its moral and strategic interests to focus only on Prime Minister Modi and Netanyahu’s friendship. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi also shared the article on X and supported Sonia Gandhi’s views. “India should bring back its independent foreign policy and speak out during the humanitarian crisis in Gaza,” he said.
